Building Momentum: Quanta 2022 Sustainability Report

Commanding typography and graphics highlight a company’s progress toward clean energy.

Quanta Services is a leading specialty contractor that designs, constructs, repairs, and maintains the energy and communications infrastructure that connects people and power. For the third year, we designed Quanta’s sustainability report and website, which showcase the company’s annual social, environmental, and governance-related progress.

I developed the theme, “Building Momentum,” as a reference to Quanta’s advancement of a carbon-neutral economy and a play on their literal capabilities in constructing the power grid. The theme inspired an energetic design that uses halftones and arrows to convey a sense of movement, growth, and progress. Inspiring photography, bold typography, and bright, modern layouts built on a dynamic grid emphasize the increased focus on clean energy.

We wanted to promote engagement beyond the C-suite and top investors. Many sustainability reports have a templated appearance with repetitive, text-heavy spreads. We instead took our cues from magazines to create custom layouts with a high level of refinement, a variety of features and content types, and thoughtful integration of text and images.

In the report, each section opens with a striking photo composition to help pace long-form content. Photos of actual Quanta employees in action are layered with bold orange arrows, halftone patterns, and outlined type to create depth and drama. On the cover, a ligature creates a lightning bolt in the report title as a nod to Quanta’s logo and origin in the electric power industry.

Wherever possible, we expanded data and tables into infographics that explain concepts visually for greater interest, engagement, and ease of understanding. We created over 40 infographics, including charts, diagrams, maps, timelines, by-the-numbers treatments, and more. Numerous sidebars and “In Focus” features expand on main stories and make the content digestible. Pull quotes from some of Quanta's nearly 60,000 employees recognize their hard work and humanize the narrative.

The website and social media images employ full-width imagery, ample white space, and side-scrolling features to immerse the user in the visuals and content. On the website, a build-your-own-report tool exports a custom version of the report to help readers zero in on topics of interest.
